Prospective Pre-Health Students

Thank you for your interest in the University of Oregon!  Are you interested in a health profession?  From pre-medicine to pre-physical therapy, students can complete the science coursework required by many health professional schools while attending the UO.  Pre-health is considered a “professional objective,” and is not an academic major.

What can you major in? Anything!

  • Given the pre-health curriculum, some majors may coincide well with the courses you plan to take.  For example, the requirements for chemistry, biology, biochemistry, human physiology, general science, and physics majors are similar to those required by medical schools.

  • Almost all health professional schools make a special point of welcoming non-science majors. They emphasize their interest in candidates who demonstrate competency in other disciplines, from business to music.

Admission
Do you have any questions about how to apply to the University of Oregon, admission requirements, opportunities to visit the campus, or general questions about UO?  Explore the following website and contact the Office of Admissions for more information:  http://admissions.uoregon.edu/

Prospective First-Year Students
If you are in high school and would like to prepare yourself for college level science coursework at the UO, we recommend that you consider taking classes in the following areas:

    • Chemistry
    • Math
    • Biology
    • Physics

These courses may not be required for admission, but are highly recommended.  Challenging yourself in high school will better prepare you for college level courses.  Once you apply and are accepted to the University of Oregon, you will attend a mandatory orientation where you will meet with an Academic Advisor who will help you develop your first class schedule!

For more information about Pre-Health at the UO, please read through the Pre-Health pamphlet.

Prospective Transfer Students
If you are transferring to the UO from another institution, you may be wondering, “Where do I start?”  This will depend on the courses you have taken, and your professional objective.  When you apply to the UO, your official transcripts will be evaluated.  If you would like to get a sense of how your classes will transfer, you can use the transfer credit equivalencies website.

Once you apply to the UO and are accepted, you will be required to attend a mandatory orientation.  There are orientations geared specifically toward transfer students.  During orientation you will meet with an academic advisor to develop an appropriate class schedule.

Prospective Pre-Nursing Students
Are you interested in earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing?  If so, we highly recommend that you contact a Pre-Health advisor to discuss the multiple routes to a Nursing degree.  The University of Oregon DOES NOT offer a Nursing degree.   There are many schools in Oregon that do offer a BSN including:

Advising
As a first year UO student interested in a health profession, we recommend that you schedule an appointment with a Pre-Health Academic Advisor during your first term at the University of Oregon. Working with an advisor can help you individualize the pre-health information throughout this website to your situation.
