Auditions
Our Auditions
Mind the Gap holds auditions at the beginning of fall quarter and at the end of spring quarter every year. All members of the UO community are welcome and encouraged to audition — the group includes both undergraduates and graduates, who joined the group anywhere from their freshman to their senior year. Non-UO-students can audition as well, but the group is required to have the 80% of the group be UO stuents.
It may seem like a stressful process at first, but it's actually a lot of fun. This year, Mind the Gap will be setting up a table in the EMU on Friday, September 24th, from 5:00-7:30 PM. Feel free to stop by and chat with us, ask us questions — that's why we're there!
The audition itself is really not that bad — we promise! Auditions will be held in the UO School of Music on on Sunday, October 3rd, at 12:00 PM with sign-ups in the lobby starting at 11:00 AM. Auditions can often take all day, so please be sure that your entire day is free or flexible!
We'll start with some scales, just to warm you up and get a sense for your vocal range (i.e. soprano, bass, etc). Then we'll do some simple pitch matching, where we'll play a few notes on the piano and ask you to sing them back for us. We can't say it enough - DON'T stress about these! We're not looking for perfection; we just want to see what you can do.
Your Solo
We want to hear you sing a one-minute snippet of whatever song you want! Sing whatever you feel comfortable with - we're not judging your song choice, and we've heard everything from The Killers to Sinatra. We just want to hear you do your thing!
Since we know there's often a lot of stress about the solo, here are a few tips: Try to pick a song that fits your voice and showcases what you can do. We can't tell how killer your voice is if you don't show us! Don't worry about trying to learn some new song to impress us; chances are, if it's a song you already know and love, you'll be at your best. And have FUN with it - this one may seem obvious, but it makes a tremendous difference when we can clearly see that somebody is having a good time. We're looking for performers, not just singers, so feel free to rock out, even if you're rocking out to The Sound of Music. Hit us with your best shot!
Callbacks
Now that we’ve seen what you can do on your own we’d like to see how you sound with the group. Don’t worry too much; this is also a way for you to get to know us. We’ll teach you a small bit of one of our songs and have you sing with us for a bit.
That’s it! Feel free to contact us with any questions.
