Ash Creek Intermediate School

Thermal Case Study

Abstract

During an initial visit to Ash Creek Intermediate School in Monmouth, Oregon, we observed that the library felt remarkably cooler than in the rest of the building. We also noted that the computer lab located directly off the library was quite warm and stuffy when under peak use during the lunch period. This study looks at thermal comfort issues in the library during the winter season of 2003. We hypothesized that “ the HVAC system in the library provides cooler conditions than is specified by ASHRAE 55-1992, Thermal Environmental Conditions for Human Occupancy.” Temperature (dry bulb and globe), humidity, and air velocity measurements were taken over the course of a week, using Hobo dataloggers to look at ambient conditions within the space, uniformity of these conditions, and the influence of the adjacent computer lab. Results show the conditions in the library for that week were consistently cooler than those specified by ASHRAE 55-1992.
