Introduction

Thermal comfort is an issue which affects everyone’s daily life. When a person is thermally comfortable their environment is in general more enjoyable. This case study looks at thermal comfort issues within the library at Ash Creek Intermediate School in Monmouth, Oregon. When visiting the school the library seemed to be much cooler then the classrooms and other spaces within the school. This raised many questions about the thermal comfort within the library, such as, are people comfortable within this space, what are the heat gains and losses within the space, how does the HVAC system work and is it on a schedule, and if the temperatures within the space where meeting thermal comfort standards. This case study examines thermal comfort issues within the library at Ash Creek Intermediate School and if they are meeting the ASHRAE 55-1992 thermal comfort standards.
