How do drawings affect what we design? How do images affect what we think?

In this course, we look at how designers represent their work, exploring how design media affects process and content. We examine ways of showing form and space with special attention to how they become conventions and the effects of the conventions. In the fall semester we look back to the history and theory of representation while in the spring semester, we investigate the effects of technical innovations. Discussions of concepts are interwoven with experiments in useing media.

OBJECTIVES

• To understand how representations work: as design visualisation tools, communication tools, and construction tools.
• To understand the possibilities and limitations of both traditional and high-tech media in shaping perception and content.
• To understand how drawing techniques evolved through time and how traditional methods can inform the development of new formats.
