To: Peter Gilkey Colleagues,
The actions taken at the 6 May 2009 meeting of the Statutory Faculty have consequences for the
University that are of concern to the University Senate. Two prominent consequences are:
These consequences are examined in the attached pdf "Reflections on the Faculty meeting of 6 May
2009."
The first consequence is particularly important because it leaves university governance in a clouded
condition. The Senate can clarify the condition, however, by the simple expedient of discussing,
amending, and proposing to the Faculty a governance document that specifies the manner in which the
Faculty can carry out its oversight obligations. Such a document could be brought for ratification to
the Faculty Meeting promised by President Frohnmayer for November, 2009. A proposed governance
document that could serve as a foundation for such action is also attached.
Why not leave all this hard work for the committee that the University President proposes to
appoint? That committee, if it is formed, might, again, create a governance document that fails to
properly provide for the legally mandated role of the Faculty in University governance. Should that
happen, it will be essential to have a well-prepared, well-circulated counter proposal.
Respectfully,
Frank
