Epidemiology Settings

Click on the name of a parameter to obtain a definition

Displays the settings for various parameters that influence the rate of spread of a disease through a host population. Each value can be changed by the user by either moving the slider or by typing in a number in the number box to the right of the parameter's name.

Host Population Flow Chart

Displays a flow chart model of the dynamics of the host population. In this case, each individual in the host population belongs in one of three categories: susceptible, infectious, or recovered. The arrows show how individuals enter or leave the population (through births or deaths) or move from one category to another The rates of flow between categories is determined by the values for the parameters in the settings panel described above.

Population Size vs. Time

Displays host population sizes for each category for each time interval. When the population gets large, the population values on the y-axis will be expressed in scientific notation, for example: 5.00 e+ 07 (which represents 5 times 10 to the 7th power, or 50,000,000.

In the graph above, the susceptible population is in blue, the infectious population is purple, and the recovered population is green.

The values displayed are calculated from other population values; you cannot change this graph directly. You may alter the current population size by choosing "Variable Settings..." from the Settings menu and entering the value that you want into the appropriate field of the "Variable Settings" dialog box

To see this graph, if it is not already shown, choose the ìPopulation Size vs. Timeî command from the Display-type menu. The data can be displayed either as a graph or as a table (see below).

Deaths vs. Time

Displays the number opf deaths in the host population as a function of time. When the population gets large, the population values on the y-axis will be expressed in scientific notation, for example: 5.00 e+ 07 (which represents 5 times 10 to the 7th power, or 50,000,000.

To see this graph, if it is not already shown, choose the ìDeaths vs. Timeî command from the Display-type menu. The data can be displayed either as a graph or as a table.
