OCGS Information

I partnered with the Office of the Chief Government Statistician. The reference persons were helpful in providing access to staff (including enumerators, data managers, and computer programmers who helped with the setup of the data entry software) and helped me navigate the Zanzibar bureaucracy by writing letters of introduction and support. Typically, the institution requires a 15% fee of the research budget, negotiable, which does not include payments to their staff for hired services. I found the fees more than appropriate given the valuable services they provided. To get in touch with OCGS, contact either Mayasa Mwinyi at 0777 431 549 or Amour at 0777 419467.

Research Assistants

My research assistant, Hajj M. Hajj, is self-employed and works full-time helping foreign researchers with whatever their needs are. Hajj speaks excellent English, has good organizational skills and is a good thinking partner. Because of these qualities, he is also very busy and in demand.

I employed 13 enumerators to carry out my household survey. All of them have extensive experience doing household surveys for the Tanzanian government, which means that they have the institutional connections with local leaders on top of being efficient, effective data collectors. They work in different areas of Zanzibar, and are the ‘go to’ people for anyone doing rural household surveys in their areas. They do not speak English, so working with them requires either a good command of KiSwahili or a translator. If you want more information about any of these persons, contact me.
