Undergraduate Prizes & Scholarships
Every year, the Creative Writing Program offers the following awards to undergraduate writers for excellence in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction.
The Creative Writing Program invites two nationally know authors (one poet, one fiction writer) to judge student manuscripts. First, second, and third place are awarded in each genre. Certificates with judges’ comments accompany this prize.
The Penny Wilkes Scholarship in Writing and the Environment is awarded to both undergraduate and graduate students for "writing that has some connection to the environment and that shows a human relationship to the environment, which is especially important in this day and age when we really need to get back to nature."
The Reginald Shepherd Memorial Prize in Poetry supports poetry that reflects classical and modern sensibilities in language of precision and beauty. It also awards poetry criticism that helps us understand poetry of any type from any period in alternating years.
