Our Summer Geology Field Camp is taught as a series of three 2-week courses, taught sequentially in central Oregon and southwestern Montana:
1. June 20-July 3: GEOL 406 Field Studies Volcanology & Surveying (central Oregon), with Reed Burgette (4 credits; $450 course fee)
2. July 4-16: GEOL 406 Field Studies: Stratigraphy & Geomorphology (southwestern Montana), with Becky Dorsey (4 credits; $650 course fee)
3. July 17-31: GEOL 406 Field Studies: Structural Geology (southwestern Montana), with Marli Miller (4 credits; $650 course fee)
Graduate-level credit (GEOL 606) is also available for graduate students. Students who need a full 6-week field camp to satisfy their degree requirements will want to take all three of the above courses. Students with other degree requirements may take single courses, with the restriction that students attending the Montana portion must take both Montana segments. All students must apply for each course individually (see forms below). We welcome applications from both Oregon and non-UO students.
Course fees listed above are charged in addition to tuition. Tuition for summer 2012 is expected to be $669 per 4-credit course for in-state students, and $2,348 per 4-credit course for non-resident students. This is a sharp increase from last year (sorry!). Once students are admitted they will need to pay a deposit of $50 per course, payable to the Dept of Geological Sciences by April 1.
The first course will start with an organizational meeting at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday June 20. The group will return to Eugene on July 30 or 31. Students will do course evaluations and help with clean-up the next morning, and the course will be officially over at noon that day.
Here is the class of summer, 2007. Check out this Geology field camp slide show by Marli Miller.
Students who want to stay in campus dorms while at the University of Oregon (June 19, 20 and at the end) will need to pay an extra approximately $150 to cover that cost. If you want to stay in a UO dorm, be sure to let us know before April 15. Other costs will include occasional meals on days off and other incidentals. Students will also want to bring personal spending money.
To apply, please complete one or more of the following applications:
and send them to: Becky Dorsey, Field Camp Coordinator, Dept. of Geological Sciences, 1272 University of Oregon, Eugene, OR. The application deadline is February 15, 2012. We expect to decide about admissions by March 5. Once you are accepted you will need to send us a non-refundable deposit ($50 per course) by April 1. Late-comers will be considered on a space-available basis. Queries can be sent to rdorsey “at” uoregon.edu.
