This MA emphasis prepares students for a media career or further academic study. Students can develop screenwriting skills; gain enhanced media understanding, perhaps for use in secondary education; or prepare for a Ph.D. in a film studies program elsewhere. If a student who completes the M.A. in English with an Emphasis in Film Studies wants to continue here, he or she will go through the regular process of applying for admission to our Ph.D. program.
The curriculum for each student's graduate work will be determined by a specific advising process with film studies faculty. Before registering for the first term of classes, the student will write a contract detailing her or his curricular obligations. This contract then provides the key structuring element in the individual's graduate work. In addition, the film studies advisor, who will act as the student's Individual Faculty Advisor, will formally review the curricular contract in the student's winter term to reaffirm the student's progress toward developing a solid basis for a thesis project.
Course Requirements

Twelve approved graduate courses:
- One 600-level film seminar in the English Department.
- Three 500-level film courses in the English Department.
- One or two 600-level seminars in the English Department in theory, criticism, or twentieth century literature; or in the Folklore Program.
- One 605 Independent Reading and Conference course in media aesthetics and film theory. This course will be supervised by film studies faculty.
- Two 600-level seminars in the Journalism Department.
- One or more 500- or 600-level film studies or related courses in other departments.
- One 605 course for the student's thesis project.
- Foreign Language. Reading competence in a foreign language.
- Minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.50.
- Residency requirement of nine approved graduate seminars taken at the University of Oregon.
