Ivory-Billed and Black-Backed Woodpeckers

A pair of Ivory-billed woodpeckers need about 10 square miles for survival. They spend most of their time in old growth hard- wood areas with large amounts of dead trees and decaying wood. When will we learn that the top of the food chain needs the bottom of the food chain for survival: Decaying wood provides habitat for millions of organisms. Learn to see the beauty in a fallen tree, an artistic snag. How long will we have our Black-backed woodpecker to the North and down into Oregon and Northern California? He needs dead and rotting conifers, especially those filled with beetles--a fine insect eater, not unlike his Ivory-billed cousin to the south.
