An overlooked resource? Wonderful stuff from the USDA Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station!

I have long enjoyed receiving technical reports from the PNW Research Station. Most are free to the public and, as most government documents, are in the public domain. That means teachers and newsletter editors (like me) can copy and/or reproduce use the material without the burden of copyright permission letters. It is proper, however, to correctly cite the source of what's being reproduced; give credit where credit is due.

A fine example of what I'm talking about is found in the following paper: Invertebrates of the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest, Western Cascade Range, Oregon. V: An Annotated List of Insects and Other Arthropods by Gary L. Parsons, Gerasimos Cassis, Andrew R. Moldenke, John D. Lattin, Norman H. Anderson, Jeffrey C. Miller, Paul Hammond, and Timothy D. Schowalter. General Technical Report PNW-GTR-290, November 1991.

The report is mostly pretty dry reading for any but the most devoted of bug lovers: page after page listing the 3,454 species of arthropods found at the forest. However, each section divider is marked with an outstanding drawing by Bonnie Hall and a little writeup about the bugs depicted. There are 9 nature stories in all. A sampling is reproduced here, much reduced from the original size.
