WARMUP 1C: deltaT

Drag the Warmup 1 file from the Desktop over the Energy Scheming application icon to open it.

The Energy Scheming window should appear on the left and the Netscape window on the right.

1) Using the 100 sf south wall previously created, please answer the following questions. You may wish to do Energy Scheming runs to answer these questions. If you want to compare graphic reports, print them out by selecting Print Energy Performance Report from the File menu and configure the screen like this:

2) The internal thermostat set point affects the delta T. To change the thermostat, under the Define menu, select Schedules.

Under Allowable Temperature, select either Maximum or Minimum setting. To change either the maximum or minimum thermostat setting, first click on the black square (if maximum) or grey square (if minimum) of the time of day you wish to change the thermostat setting. (In the example, the whole day's setting is changed). Then drag the square up or down until you reach the desired temperature, which is displayed on the left. Next, hold down the shift key and drag the cursor to the right to fill in the desired hours.

The exterior color of a wall affects the wall's exterior surface temperature and therfore the deltaT. To change the color of a wall: Under the View menu, select Drawing/Takeoff layer. Select Elevations from the drawing file icon. Double click on the south elevation icon. Open the wall icon. Choose Select Wall Components.

On the lower left, see Ext. color. Change to Light or Dark, click ok, and close the spec.

The direction a wall faces also affects the surface temperature of the wall. To change the orientation of the wall: Under the View menu, select Drawing/Takeoff layer. Select Elevations from the drawing file icon. Double click on the south elevation icon. Open the wall icon.

Select the circle of the compass which marks the orientation of the wall, for example, the top circle is North. Close the spec.

Note that although you have changed the orientation of the wall, the name and orientation of the elevation remains the same. You may edit the name by selecting it or if you wish to change the orientation of the elevation and all its specifications, select Review Drawing Info from the View menu. The next screen allows you to make changes in the orientation and scale of the elevation.

3) Which of the following would reduce the heat gain through the wall the most? (there can be more than one correct answer, but if any one incorrect answer is checked, the question will be marked incorrect)

make the wall lighter (more reflective)?
make the wall darker (less reflective)?
increase the maximum thermostat setting from 78 to 80 ?
decrease the maximum thermostat setting from 78 to 76 ?

4) Click here if you would like to see the correct answers.
