Techniques to Palpate and Locations of the Bony Landmarks of the Posterior Shoulder

#1: Inferior Angle of the Scapula

The inferior angle can be palpated by bringing the hand in an L-shape inferiorly and medially to the scapula, pushing slightly superiorly and laterally.  The the inferior and medial borders of the scapula should come together at the junction of the L-shape in the hand.  This is the inferior angle.

#2: Superior Angle of the Scapula

The superior angle can be palpated by located the most medial portion of the spine of the scapula, and then moving about an inch superiorly and slightly medially.  The superior angle may be obstructed by muscle mass.

#3: Spine of the Scapula

The spine can be located by palpated along the posterior and inferior portion of the acromion process until you feel a ridge-like bony prominence that extends to the medial border of the scapula.
