The research paper may be on any topic relevant to the subject matter of the course. Students are encouraged to submit to Professor Sheridan a statement of their intended topic by Feb. 14 at the latest, to receive feedback and possible recommendations of sources.

Minimum research requirements for the paper are the use of one book-length study, plus three additional sources, one of which must be an "original source" in the sense used in this course, such as an official European Union document. The sources besides the book and the original source may be other books, chapters of books, or scholarly articles. All of the research materials for the paper must be "serious"; that is, they must be works with scholarly or analytical content.

The length of the research paper is 10-12 pages (12-point type, double-spaced pages) or 3000-3600 words. The paper is due March 13.

The course website provides numerous aids for locating books and other sources to be used in researching the paper. These aids include especially the Bibliography and the General Reference and Subject Guides of the University of Pittsburgh Center for West European Studies, and All Resources. Consult scholarly journals, such as The Journal of Common Market Studies, as well as books, in your search for studies to use for your paper.
