PAC-8 Standings Explanation

The Pac-8 standings are based on a weighted point system. There are 3 main components:

A. The first thing that is done is to place each team in order based on
winning percentage:

Example:
1. USC (highest winning %)
2. Oregon
3. Cal
4. UCLA
5. Stanford
6. WSU
7. UW
8. ASU (lowest winning percentage)

B. then each team is assigned a point value:

1st place: 4.0 points
2nd place: 3.5
3rd Place: 3.0
....etc...
8th Place: .5

C. Now the points for each team are added up:
Suppose Oregon beat USC who is in first place in winning percentage, Oregon
receives 4 points for winning. If Oregon beats ASU who is in last place we would
receive .5 points. It depends on what place the team falls in with
respect to their winning %. All the points from victories are added up
to determine are total points and hence are final standings.
However, point values change each week , as teams change order due to
winning percentage. This means, that if Oregon beats USC when they were in
1st place with winning percentage, and three weeks later they have the
worst winning percentage our total points will change and we will only
get .5 points for that victory. Therefore the standings are dynamic (and
confusing) and the final results cannot totally be determined until the
end of the season
