Since its creation in 1995, the EDC’s HOPES (Holistic Options for Planet Earth Sustainability) conference has remained the only ecological design conference developed and managed by students. Held every year in April, HOPES works to promote the deeper understanding and broader application of sustainable design principles. For more information about this year’s conference please take a look at our Conference Schedule
Over the past ten years, the conference has brought such luminaries as Shigeru Ban, Paul Stametz, Sim Van der Ryn, Samuel Mockbee, James Hubbel, Angela Danadijieva, Michael Pyatok, Steve Badanes, Richard Register, David Orr, John Schaeffer and Clare Cooper Marcus to the University of Oregon campus.
This year we shift our focus to Dirt. Dirt is taken for granted, It is stepped on, bulldozed, moved, cleaned up, dug out, and swept under the rug. Seldom is dirt brought to the forefront or thought of as a valued resource or vital to our modern society Although we utilize it directly in food production, interact on a tactile and intuitive level, and use it in the construction of our indoor and outdoor environments the overall potential remains untapped or misunderstood.
We invite you to dig deeper and investigate the properties, materiality, and opportunities buried in dirt. Join s for HOPES 18 as we uncover with Panels, Workshops and KEYNOTE SPEAKERS the possibilities just below the surface.
