I reported earlier to the Senate on a few of the issues which have arisen this year at IAC meetings, including:
Since the latter will be discussed here later today, and since (so far as I know) there have not been any further developments regarding the ALC, this report will not include further comments on either of these issues. Please see the earlier report (archived on the IAC website) .
During the past month or so, most of the energies of the IAC have been devoted to working and communicating with the new Atheltic Department administration. We have thus far been very pleased with the openness of the new AD, Pat Kilkenny, and also with his strong interest in addressing issues having to do with the academic side of the student-athlete experience here at Oregon. We are also quite happy thus far with the strong efforts of the new campus liason, Neal Zoumboukos, to learn what faculty interests and concerns are, and to work to improve cross-river relations.
We are closely monitoring the APR graduation reports, which are used by the NCAA as a monitor of the academic success of the student athletes. While our earlier reports were not great, the report which came out shows improvement. We will continue to monitor them, looking for futher improvement.
We note the new IAC website, which includes membership and minutes for the past ten years or so, and includes past Senate and Assembly legislation relevant to athletics (including some from the late 1800's and early 1900's.
