Judges needed for “the world’s largest
science fair”: Volunteer today!
The Intel
International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), the world’s
largest pre-college science fair, will be held in Portland, Oregon, May 9-15,
2004 at the Oregon Convention Center. This is the first time this prestigious
international event has been held in Oregon. Intel ISEF brings together more than 1,400 of the brightest
young scientists from 14 countries to compete for more than $3 million in
awards and scholarships. The students present projects that earned “Best
of Fair” in their home communities, work that is often at the level of
graduate research. At recent
fairs, 17% of the participants had applied for patents on their results. Oregon will be well represented at this
event by TEAM OREGON, a group of ~70 students selected in science fairs held
around the state. Oregon students
typically do very well, and last year one of our students, Ryna Karnick, won
the highest engineering award in the entire event!
A key part of the experience for the
students is meeting and discussing their work with the academic and industry
professionals who serve as judges. Projects presented by students can be in any
field of science, mathematics and engineering. At least 1000 professional judges are needed to visit the
displays and interview these inspiring finalists on May 12, 2004. Grand Awards judges are required to
have either: 1) a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent degree OR 2) a minimum of six years
of related professional experience in one of 14 scientific or engineering
disciplines. To volunteer as a judge, apply on-line at the Intel ISEF 2004
website (www.intelisef2004.org). We hope to see you there!
