Abstract

This article provides a description of the First Step to Success early intervention program for preventing antisocial behavior among at-risk kindergartners. First Step to Success was developed through a four-year grant (1992-96) to the author from the U.S. Office of Special Education Programs. First Step to Success consists of three interrelated modules or components. These are (1) a universal screening procedure to detect at-risk kindergartners who show the early signs of aggressive, antisocial behavior; (2) a school intervention, involving the teacher, child, and peers, to teach an adaptive behavioral profile that enables academic success and the development of friendships; and (3) a home component in which parents and caregivers are assisted in teaching their child key skills that contribute to school success (e.g., cooperation, listening, accepting limits, working independently, etc.). The overall goal of First Step to Success is to help at-risk kindergartners get off to the best start possible in school and to divert them from a path leading to aggressive, destructive behavior patterns.
