Abstract

This paper describes risk and protective factors relating to school safety and a lack thereof. Risks and protective factors are identified at individual student levels and at the level of the school. The case is made that future research on school safety should address both student and school dimensions of school safety conjointly. Issues germane to the assessment of school safety, the profiling of students and schools on key variables, and the need to develop effective, integrated approaches to school safety that address the needs of all students are discussed.
