Title

Irrationality of gamma?

Speaker

John Jasper

Date

October 13, 2009

Abstract

We will discuss the constant gamma, which some consider to be the third most important constant, after pi and e. We will show how the constant arises from an attempt to find a simple formula for the partial sums of the harmonic series. Then, we will see a couple of instances where the constant unexpectedly arises. Finally, we will discuss the irrationality and transcendence of gamma. This talk should be accessible to anyone who has taken math 253.
