TitleNon-commutative Kinship Structures SpeakerAndy Conner DateNovember 17, 2009 AbstractMaximizing genetic diversity is a problem for isolated indiginous populations. I will describe the kinship stucture that has evolved on the Pacific island of Ambrym, made prominent by the work of Claude Levi-Strauss and studied axiomatically by Andre Weil. The kinship structure on Ambrym can be described abstractly as a noncommutative group, giving a surprising example of mathematics occuring in nature. Return to Undergraduate Seminar home page. |
