BEWARE: your web browser may be out-of-date...

Every year, incoming students to the UO mathematics program are highly encouraged to attend "Pre-School" session (or, as Brad calls it, "Boot Camp") during the two weeks preceeding the teaching orientation. During this session, we do a wide variety of math problems that serve both to refresh the basics before you dive into your courses and to give you a preview of topics generally covered in the core courses. In addition, pre-school gives you an opportunity to get familiar with the university and take care of some pesky around-campus errands, as well as to meet and get used to working with the other incoming students.

Problem Sets:

Pre-school will begin on September 8th and run through the 19th. We'll meet every weekday in Deady 210 from 10 AM to noon (or whenever we feel like stopping) to discuss the problems distributed on a previous day and work through any that gave people difficulty. Around mid-August, I'll post the first set of problems here so we have something to chat about on the first day.

If you plan to attend or have any questions, please send me an e-mail at jcomes@uoregon.edu.

Pre-school aside, if you have any questions about moving to Eugene, starting school, movies starring Christian Slater, etc. I'd be happy to try to answer them. I'll be around for most of the summer, so feel free to write or drop by my office (Deady 1) if I can do anything for you.

Here are some links which you may find useful:

  • General information. A bunch of information stolen from previous years' pages about life in the math department.
  • Summer seminar schedule. This year Andy Conner is in charge of the summer seminar. The summer seminar is an informal lecture series where graduate students give talks on various topics of general interest or which are basic elements of their field of study which they consider important enough that everyone should know. Should you be visiting the department on a day when a seminar is being given, you should consider attending. If you have any interest in giving a talk, feel free to contact Andy at aconner(at)uoregon.edu.
  • Fall courses. A list of instructors and textbooks for this Fall's 500/600 level algebra, analysis, and topology courses.
