In addition to doing assigned readings and attending class and discussion sections regularly (worth approximately 10% of the final grade), students
will take one brief quiz and three one-hour examinations in the course of
the term. The quiz (worth approximately 6% of the final grade) will be
given early in the term in order to familiarize students with the general
format of Art History exams, as well as to assure that they are grasping
the course material. Like the quiz, the three longer examinations (each
worth approximately 28% of the final grade) will cover material from the
lectures, readings, and discussion sections. They will normally include
such elements as brief (one paragraph long) identifications of individual
monuments, comparisons of monuments, objective answers, and short essay
questions. Although we will in class consider many more works of art
than there is space on the Monuments
List attached to your Syllabus, works that you will be asked to
identify on exams will be drawn from that list. In addition, photographs
of many of these monuments will be posted for study in the glass case
across the lobby from the classroom (LA 177) and be available on Flashcards.

The discussion sessions are a required component of the ARH 204 survey. They are conducted once weekly by the Graduate Teaching Fellows. It is necessary that you attend the section for which you are registered. Attendance will be taken at each meeting from the class list provided by the Registrar. The discussion sessions are 10% of the course grade. There is a coursepack of readings for the discussion sessions which is available for purchase at the bookstore and on reserve in the AAA Library. The coursepack readings must be read in advance of the discussion sessions. The Graduate Teaching Fellows are available for help by appointment. |
