State Inequality Visualizations
These are animated visualizations of the evolution of state-level inequality that I created using R (specifically, the ggplot2 and animation libraries). Mark Thoma published an earlier version of these visualizations on his blog, as did several blogs and new sites. The chief difference between the earlier animations and these is the color palette - these animations move from green to red as inequality increases, which seems to make more intuitive sense to most people. Additionally, I cleaned up the legends to only show 3 digits of precision. The data used to create these graphs is from a research project (in progress), and is derived from CPS public use microdata. I will make the code and data available as the project progresses.
