diglib: Interesting articles
In preparing for a conference I'm going to in a couple of weeks, I've been
reading a number of articles that I think this group might be interested
in. I would highly recommend Priscilla Caplan's article on _International
Metadata Initiatives_ that can be found at:
http://lcweb.loc.gov/catdir/bibcontrol/caplan_paper.html. It provides a
good overview of different metadata initiatives, including the INDECS and
ONIX schemes developed with more commercial intent. INDECS
(Interoperability of Data in E-Commerce Systems) was funded by the
European Commission and had the goal of creating a framework for
electronic trading of intellectual property rights in all media. ONIX was
developed by the Association of American Publishers.
The second article that I think you'd find interesting is Carl Lagoze's
paper (http://lcweb.loc.gov/catdir/bibcontrol/lagoze_paper.html) entitled:
Business Unusual: How "Event-Awareness" May Breathe Life Into the Catalog?
Lagoze is the Digital Library Scientist in the Computer Science Department
at Cornell University - a place where some of the more interesting work in
Digital Libraries is being tried out, I think. The whole concept of event
awareness is one that I hadn't been aware of but that makes a great deal
of sense to me for digital resources.
