Tim,
I thought you would be interested in what Vanderbilt is doing. I replied
that we would be very supportive of their efforts...$1,000/year for
unlimited access is a very reasonable price, compared to how the commercial
sector gouges us.

I should also mention that the library now has a group working on digital
initiatives and a coordinator for Digital Library Services. We are making
good progress on the standards issues, options for mass storage, defining
appropriate collections, etc. Our focus will be on collaborative efforts,
both on campus and with other research libraries. Your comments this
morning prompted me to bring this to your attention, and let you know that
we are interested in working with you in this area whenever it seems
appropriate.

>Dear Friends,
>
>As many of you know, Vanderbilt has recorded, abstracted and indexed the
>nightly news from ABC, CBS, and NBC since the Democratic Convention in
>1968. And we have recorded CNN Nightline news beginning in the early
>1989. We also have 9,000 hours of special events such as the Gulf War,
>Watergate, and Election 2000. Our database contains over 660,000 records
>linked to 30,000 hours of nightly news coverage. We even index the
>commercials.
>
>Currently access to our database is free, but researchers pay from $10 for a
>copy to $50 per hour for a compilation of tapes. We would like to digitize
all
>39,000 hours of coverage and offer a subscription to a "search, click and
>view" database which would give immediate access to any news segment in
>our collection. Because of copyright constraints we plan to allow only one
>viewer to see an individual segment at a time, and the news segment will
self-
>distruct from their computer after a certain length of time.
>
>As a quick and dirty marketing study, how many of you would subscribe to
>the TVNA digital database for say $1,000 per year for unlimited access for
>you partons. We will happily drop the price if a large number of subscribers
>were to materialize.

>Thanks for your help.
