Spencer's Patterns and Symmetry

Spencer is five years old and is learning in school about patterns. He likes them a lot, so we work on them at home, too. Spencer put in the S's and F's in the image below; that's for Start and Finish. The first S and F are where Mom started and finished the example, and the second S and F are where Spencer started and finished the rest.

Once we had worked on patterns for a while, we started talking about what happens if we turn a pattern backwards. This led to a discussion of mirror images and symmetry. This is Spencer's symmetry image. The top part he is identifying (more or less) the axis of symmetry. The bottom part, Mom drew one half on the left in blue, and Spencer made the mirror image on the right, in green.
