General Introduction

While Athens will never lose its place as the intellectual hub of the Ancient Greek world, it is important to realize the degree to which such activity occurred throughout the Mediterranean at this time and before. The following modules are representations of:

  • the variety of origins of Greek intellectuals
  • the places where they were active

The module concludes with an analysis of the travel patterns of some of the most important Greek intellectuals. The maps in this module demonstrate that the Greek intellectual revolution was a phenomenon of the Greek city-state wherever it was established. Of course, Athens remains central to understanding the successes but it is readily apparent that Greeks everywhere were interested in and engaged in discussion of the central themes of this intellectual revolution.
