Syllabus for Half-Day
Workshop
Dr.
Dave Moursund has been working in
the computers in education field for more than 30
years.
The purpose of this workshop is to help
broaden the participants' insights into planning for and
implementing computer-oriented preservice and inservice
teacher education programs of study.

Activity 1: Get started by handing
out the handouts and having the participants organize
themselves into groups of three to four people. These groups
will be used in a number of group discussion
activities.

Activity 2: Have the workshop
facilitator and each of the participants briefly introduce
themselves. The introductions should focus on each persons
interest in and involvement with planning and implementing
preservice and inservice teacher education programs in the
field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in
education.

Activity 3: Consider the following
diagram that indicates that there are things that people can
do better than computers, and vice versa. For example,
computers can play chess better than people, but people can
read body language to recognize a person's emotional state
better than computers. In small groups, share your insights
into this diagram and its educational
implications.

Activity 4: This workshop makes
extensive use of the 7-point scale given below. We will
discuss the meaning of each of the scale points. As we do
this, make an effort to do a self-evaluation of your overall
level of expertise in the field of ICT in
education.

Activity 5: Examine the Topic 1
Self-Assessment Instrument. Self-assess yourself on the
first two questions in this instrument. Then, in small
groups share your insights gained by use of the first two
questions in this instrument, and discuss the educational
implications of your insights.

Activities 6, 7, 8, and 9: As time
permits, repeat Activity 5, but use the Topic 2, Topic 3,
Topic 4, and Topic 5 Self-Assessment Instruments.

Activity 10: Briefly discuss the
scale of work and the needed qualifications of a person
functioning at the level of a 5, 6, or 7 on the 7-point
scale.

Webpage: A
discussion of what preservice teachers can do to build their
ICT in teacher education expertise, along with short list of
Web-based resources.
