Motels near the University of Oregon

This page contains some information on motels near the University of Oregon, and is intended for the use of participants in conferences at the Department of Mathematics at the University of Oregon. Some motels are listed first, followed by instructions for walking from the nearer of them to relevant points on campus.

Motels

List of motels

The four motels closest to the University of Oregon are:

The first two are on the north side of Franklin Blvd. (see the driving directions page), in the block just east of Agate Street (the eastern boundary of the main part of the University of Oregon), and are within a 10-15 minute walk of anywhere on the campus. The Phoenix Inn is near the northwest corner of campus.

Another possibility is the

This one is farther away (not walking distance).

Location of the motels on a campus map

On this campus map, Franklin Blvd. is the diagonal street about a third of the way from the top of the map. The two Best Western motels are roughly across Franklin Blvd. from the Jacqua Academic Center, a bit closer to the right side of the map than to the left. The Phoenix Inn is in a triangular area near the top right, bounded on the south by a stream, on the north by Franklin Blvd., and on the west by Alder St. The Excelsior Inn is on the middle far left of the map, on East 13th Ave. The Motel 6 is far off the map to the right.

More campus maps can be found here. Campus maps are also available at the New Oregon Motel and probably at the Green Tree Motel and Phoenix Inn. The one you are most likely to be given is a distorted "bird's eye view" map. The WWW copy of this map has been removed, so I can't provide a link.

Restaurants

There are several restaurants along Franklin Boulevard near the first two motels listed, many small relatively cheap places to eat on East 13th Ave. west of campus (near the Excelsior Inn), and also many more within a half hour walk in several directions from campus.

Walking from the motels

Most math department conferences are held in either Fenton Hall (also the location of the math department office) or Willamette Hall, and math faculty offices are in Fenton and Deady Halls.

To find Fenton and Deady Halls on the campus map: The building approximately two thirds of the way from the center to the top left corner of the map is the Miller Theater Complex, also labelled Villard in smaller type. Deady Hall is the next building to the south, and Fenton Hall is the next building to the south of that.

Willamette Hall is in the middle of the "Lokey Science Complex". From right to left, it is a bit closer to the left of the map, and it is between Franklin Blvd. and the next street to the south.

From the Best Western motels

To walk to the math department from the Best Western New Oregon Motel or the Best Western Green Tree Motel, start by turning right (west) on Franklin Blvd. as you come out of the motel. A short distance past the New Oregon Motel (the nearer of the two) is a stoplight. The cross street is called Riverfront Parkway on the north side of the intersection and Agate St. on the south side. (See the link below to a campus map.) Cross Franklin Blvd. and go south on Agate St. one block to East 13th Ave. Turn right (west) on East 13th Ave. You will soon pass a visitor's kiosk in the middle of the road. It is often closed even when it is supposed to be open, but there are maps posted which you can read even when it is closed. Willamette Hall is a large building on your right as you proceed west along East 13th Ave, about a one block distance beyond the visitor's kiosk but a similar distance before the point at which East 13th Ave. becomes closed to cars. The main entrance is set back from the street, in a sort of courtyard between two wings of the building. To get to Fenton and Deady Halls, continue along East 13th Ave. about a one block distance beyond the point at which East 13th Ave. becomes closed to cars. Fenton Hall is an old building on your right, and its main entrance is on a path going right (north) from East 13th Ave. just before you get to the building. If you come to a place where East 13th Ave. is again open to traffic, you have gone about two blocks too far. To get to Deady Hall, take the path past the main entrance to Fenton. Deady is then the next building on the left (also quite old).

From the Phoenix Inn

Warning: I think these instructions work, but I have not tried them.

Going out the main entrance, go right (east) a short distance along Franklin Blvd. Just after crossing a small waterway (the Millrace), cut through to the right (north) to a parking lot. (The street doesn't quite go through, but I think there is a path.) Continue north, crossing an east-west street (East 11th Ave.) at a stoplight at either Kincaid St. or (less than a block farther east) at a stoplight at a fancy bus stop in the middle of the street. Take a small semicircular road southeast from the fancy bus stop, turn right (south) on a small road going through a metal gate, and follow this road though a right angle turn to the left (east). This brings you to a small parking lot between two buildings. Deady Hall is the one on the right (south). The main entrances are on the ends. To get to Fenton Hall, turn south (right) just before Deady Hall, pass its entrance, and continue south and slightly east. The next building is Fenton, and you will find yourself on its east side, with the main entrance on your right. To get to Willamette Hall, continue just past Fenton to a street (closed to traffic), turn east (left), walk past two more buildings on the left, past University Avenue on the right (the first thing that looks like a street, but it is closed to traffic here), and past two more small buildings on the left. Willamette is then the large building on the left.

From the Excelsior Inn

Coming out the main entrance, turn right (east) on East 13th Ave. Go 1.5 blocks east to reach the boundary of the University of Oregon campus. Continue east; East 13th Ave. is now closed to traffic. Pass a large building (the Lillis Business Complex) on the north (left) with two wings which come out to the street but whose main entrance is far back from the street. Fenton Hall is the next building on the north (left). There is an entrance facing the street, but to get to the main entrance walk past the building and turn north (left); it is on your left. To get to Deady Hall, turn north (left) between the Lillis Business Complex and Fenton Hall. The path is not straight, but you are facing the side of Deady Hall. The entrances are on the ends. To get to Willamette Hall, continue past Fenton Hall, past two more buildings on the left, past University Avenue on the right (the first thing that looks like a street, but it is closed to traffic here), and past two more small buildings on the left. Willamette is then the large building on the left.
