This course is open to all students. It will enhance your understanding of cultural diversity. It will also help anyone who deals or intends to deal with Russia through business, politics, media, culture, etc. Its goal is to provide students with essential Russian cultural norms and ideas, from art history and gender relations to puppets and cooking. We will focus on the features that a native Russian learns in his or her early years, builds associations upon and relates to. We will also trace many recent changes such as the evolution of political, cultural and socio-economic patterns, and alternative spiritual trends along with traditional Orthodoxy.

Since Russia is the place where Eastern (Muslim and East Asian) and Western civilizations cross, we will inevitably discuss the Eastern views and ideas and how they relate to those of the West.

Each class will provide a discussion of basic cultural patterns along with a 15-minute practicum in socializing, doing business, dancing, cooking, etc. the Russian way.
