What is Summer Institute?

In 1998, NILI held its first Summer Institute (SI) which has been running continuously since. At SI, which traditionally meets the last two weeks of June, participants from across Oregon, the Pacific Northwest, North America and elsewhere gather to work on their Native languages. Ranging from elders to youth, we live, learn and speak together.

We offer strands for beginning and experienced teachers, focused on skills for building language use and supporting your students. Participants will also attend the Tuxámshish Revitalization Learning Series (TRaiLS), a series of talks and discussions focused on Indigenous Language Revitalization, which will also be open to those not in attendance.

Important Info on SI 2024:

Course Content

Summer Institute classes will help you support your learners and speakers wherever they are in their journeys. The Beginners’ Track focuses on core Indigenous language teacher skills. The Experienced Track goes more into depth into some elements of teaching. This includes looking at topics such as self-assessment, developing activities tied to student levels, and building language use throughout the community.

This year, we are also excited to announce that in addition to conversations about language learning in classrooms, we’ll also journey into topics about language use and learning that happens outside of classroom settings. This might include family, daily use, and in your community.

All SI participants will take part in TRaiLS, our discussion series for language revitalization practitioners.

We’ll focus more heavily on course content in the mornings, and in putting that content into practice in the afternoons. Afternoons at Summer Institute will also include dedicated time for sharing and networking.

Stay tuned for more exciting details on our course content and instructor line-up soon!

Two Teacher Strands

Educators in the Beginners Track will typically have one year or less of teaching in the classroom. Those in the Experienced Track will typically have a year or more. There may be some exceptions, depending on how intensive an educator’s experience may or may not have been in a given year or more.

If you are uncertain what track you best fit in, please reach out to us at nwili@uoregon.edu or 541-346-0730. We’ll be happy to work with you to find the best place for you.
