The three-day outing includes a driver training component, a night hike to a campsite on the Oregon coast, and scenario-based learning modules emphasizing the development of field leadership skills. PEOL 285 - Wilderness Survival is a prerequisite to participation in this course. PEOL 351 - Backpacking (or equivalent experience) is also required. No exceptions!

PEOL 453 - Environmental Education- spring term This course introduces students to the natural history of the region and develops environmental interpretation skills. The focus is on thenatural history of Oregon (with an emphasis on oak/savanna, coastal old growth and western Cascades old growth ecosystems). Review the course description and schedule. Course topics include: semantics and definitions, ecological concepts, teaching strategies for outdoor settings, natural history, and environmental interpretation.Emphasis is placed on using a taxanomic key to identify native trees, shrubs and flowers. Readings, lecture notes and resources are posted to the course Blackboard site.

PEOL 451 - Adventure Education- fall term This course examines factors and variables that help students become more effective leaders and team members. Students learn how to lead and debrief adventure activities, and discover how group dynamics, communication, and other factors play an integral role in shaping the personality and character of teams. The course involves lectures, discussions, group activities, and a Saturday on-campus outing. Students gain hands-on experience leading experiential activities. Content includes: semantics and definitions, communication and feedback, leadership theory, group dynamics, history and philosophy, ethical issues, and leading and debriefing experiential activities. course information & assignments articles and lecture notes
