Revision Lists were a series of censuses taken by officials in the Russian Empire to facilitate taxation and conscription. Jews were included in Revision lists starting in 1795, after the partitions of Poland. Each census was a revision of an earlier one. The Jewish Family History web site has more information on Revision Lists and other 19th century records.
Hadassah Lipsius was able to trace ancestors in her Charney Family of Mir using Revision Lists and census records. You can read her report of the process and see samples of the information available by clicking above.
Previously, Mir researchers funded the translation of the 1816 Mir Revision List. The Surname List for the 1816 Mir Revision List is available on the Belarus SIG website at JewishGen.
In 2007, thanks to donations from descendents of people from Mir, the 1834 Mir Revision list, along with the 1858 update, have been translated and are available to be searched on the JewishGen Belarus web site.
Use "Sounds Like" to search for the last name, if you do not see it in the list above. Set a second search option to: town "Mir" and region: Minsk Gubernia. Look at the results in the Belarus Revision Lists category. You can also search for a first name, using "Any Field" setting. Many families in the 1795 records did not use last names.)
When translation costs are covered, all the information in the 1874 Mir Revision Lists also will be available. (See JewishGen Belarus SIG Projects item "Mir Revision Lists and Metrical Records" to donate to this project.)
