Mirer Yiddische Folkskul

Members of the Gershovitz family from the nearby town of Tsirin moved to Mir in 1917 or 1918, during the Russian Revolution. The family in Mir included Rifka Ressel, her daughter Golda Miriam Gershovitz and Golda's children Leiser Velvil (b. 1909), Minochka/Mindel (b. 1907) and Josef (b. 1912). Golda's husband had immigrated to Texas in 1912. It was not until 1921 that he was able to bring his wife and children to America.

One of the Gershovitz descendents recently found an old photograph of children and teachers in front of the “Mirer Yiddische Folkskul”. The photo appears to include the two older Gershovitz children among the students. There is a sign above the doorway in Polish and Yiddish that identifies the school.

According to Encyclopaedia Judaica, a Yiddish elementary school and kindergarten was founded in Mir in 1917. (ENCYCLOPAEDIA JUDAICA, Second Edition, Volume 14, p 304)

Was this that school?

Does anyone recognize the photo or know anything about the school?

Any information on when the photo might have been taken?

Notes
Tsirin is 13 miles west of Mir.
Information provided by Cyrelle Gerson, daughter of Leiser Velvil Gershovitz. He may be the boy in the front row, semi-reclining, 3rd from left. His sister Mindel might be the short girl with head covering standing, 3rd row from the top, about 4th from the left.
