Tidal Forces

Imagine a space station orbiting earth.
The station has four vacation modules.

The inner and outer modules are in the wrong orbits.
They drift away.

Here is a closeup view of the modules drifting away.

We had better attach the vacation modules with springs.

Then the springs will stretch.
The forces stretching the springs are tidal forces .

Resulting shape of the Moon.

The Earth doesn't deform so much, but the oceans do.

How many times a day is it high tide at the coast?
