The tradition of the Exposition is well documented. Much can be learned from the analysis of all of these precedents; of which there are many! There have always been different kinds of "shows"; from local trade fairs to huge international industrial fairs, national theme fairs to regional farm fairs. Each type has distinct similarities. In order to reduce the magnitude of information to something that is a bit more managable, the work for this studio will try to focus on the pavilions of specific nations. These will be "examined" at (but not imited to) each of the following Expositions:

Lewis and Clark Exposition of 1905
Stockholm Exhibition of 1930
Paris World's Fair of 1937 (Britta / Mike)
New York World's Fair of 1939 (Ethan / Peter)
IX. Trienalle di Milano of 1951 (Allen / Greg)
Brussels Fair of 1958 (Man Foon / Dan Mc)
Montreal Exposition of 1967 (Nathan / Todd)
Osaka Exposition of 1970 (Koji / Emily)
Seville Exposition of 1992 (Dan W / Todd J)

Assignment Four - Part One
In order to conserve the wear and tear on the available books, you will work in groups of two. Together you will examine one of the above expostions in addition to the pavilions of your individual client country. Your analysis of the exposition should include (but is not limited to):
a short physical description (written verbal)
a site plan
figure ground (path/space)
plans and sections of significant or unusual pavilions (if available)
physical description of the major spaces/themes
unusual general characteristics
description of significant exhibits within the pavillions

Assignment Four - Part Two

(The Path and the Spaces)
Determine the sequence of spaces along the path in one of the pavilions. (I suggest choosing one that is either available or relates to your client country.) What are the characters of the spaces? of the path? is the way constant? does it vary in width? in orientation? how does it begin? how does it end? what are the qualities of light each and every step of the way? These questions should be answered along with an in depth analysis of at least one pavillion will include, but is not restricted to:
detailed description of the construction
detailed description and analysis of the spatial ordering
detailed sequential "EKG"

The material for part one should be presented on 11 x 17 "boards" so that they can be photocopied and distributed amoung the group. The anaysis will be reviewed in detail on Monday of Week 4. The originals (or a very good photocopy) should be put into my mailbox in the Faculty Mailroom by 0800 on October 16th. I will then have them copied for class at 1:00 PM. REMEMBER - Use Primary sources whenever possible!!!!!
The material for part two should consist of boards of the same format and a "study" model of the chosen pavilion. This model should be at a scale that allows the rest of the class to review your spatial interpretations.
This work (and more) will be discussed during Week 4. I expect that the crafting of the model should not detract from its spatial descriptive qualities. The engagement of the path along the spaces one of the critical issues.
