We hope to keep your winter blahs away and your minds sharp as you share interesting challenges with other kids who love to learn! Note: Class costs include tuition and materials fees as set by the instructor. At checkout there is an additional non-refundable fee of $4.00 charged by RegOnline for each registration. *Advanced Learners typically have been identified as talented and gifted (TAG) under state guidelines or are performing above grade level in some or all subjects.

Have you gotten the programming fever? Learned a little bit of programming but are ready for more? Well, this is your chance! Start a new program with Scratch or expand on one you have already started. Learn new tools and tips and share ideas with others. Must have previous experience with Scratch or similar languages. Class sizes are small, ensuring individualized instruction and one-on-one attention throughout the process. Fire Flowers, Winged Wolves and Mountains with Eyes: Creating Collage Worlds- SPACE AVAILABLE Grades K-5 Four Saturdays: Feb 25-March 17 9:30am-12:30pm Note: This class will take place at the Moss Street Classroom, 1533 Moss Instructor: Sara Deutsch Does your imagination sometimes run wild? Do you like to explore your creativity in all sorts of new and different ways? Anyone who can cut and paste can make incredible collages. A hand can be cut out of fire, ice or sky. A baby can emerge from the cracked egg of a planet. A boy’s head can be filled with clouds, or computer chips. Collage lets us create limitless worlds, dreamscapes, and mirrors of our mind. We will design 3D masks, figures, mobiles, hats, jewelry and geometric forms. Our collage worlds will inspire science fiction stories, poems and songs. Amazing Animals SPACE AVAILABLE Grades K-1-2 Four Thursdays, March 1-22 3:15 to 4:15pm (4:30 to 5:30pm may become available if first class fills. Class size is limited to eight.) Instructor: Elizabeth Barlow, MEd.
Discover and examine the amazing behaviors of some live animals through mealworm and earthworm experiments, snail races and rodent mazes. Learn the scientific method as well. Examine animal parts like bones, a cow eye or an octopus arm using a microscope and your hands! Your teacher has nurtured observation, curiosity and the joy of learning through Science For The Curious classes in her home, at OMSI and the UO Super Summer Program. $54 plus $5 materials fee for session

Use Pattern Blocks to explore symmetry and prove some of Euclid’s Theorems. Can you draw an equilateral triangle or divide a line exactly in half without a ruler? You will learn about these and other exciting traditional Greek geometric constructions using only compass, straightedge and pencil. Explore the wonderful world of Fibonacci numbers and the Golden Ratio. Be the first kid on your block to work and play with MacMahon Cubes, 3-Color Squares and 5-color Triangles. This is Math Club! In search of challenging math experiences and the opportunity to hang out with others who love math? You’ll find a wide variety of activities including challenges with Rubik’s Cubes, MacMahon Cubes, and 3 color squares (Combinatorics), Multiplication with Napier's Bones, Euclidean constructions and proofs using straightedge and compass, Pattern Block Geometry (including proofs and constructions), Fibonacci Numbers (including a manipulative set of Fibonacci squares and Golden Rectangles), Create and solve Lego Math problems, Explore K'nex Geometry and much more! All this plus Math Homework Help if you want it. The activities will be in stations—you choose the kids you want to work with and the activities you want to explore. Wow! Take the challenge! Back by popular demand, you again have the opportunity to spend this no school day with Steve deeply involved in a mind-boggling, multi-material, major exploration of BRIDGES! Can you design and build a bridge using only paper and toothpicks? What if you added string and popsicle sticks? Maybe you have some interesting objects from home or nature no one else thought of that you could add to your construction? Do you know how to pre-stress cardboard and use then use it to construct an amazing arch bridge? Can you create a bridge of your very own design using K’nex building toys and test it out: Could you make it the required length? How much weight will it hold before it collapses? Is it the most unusual? And what about all those bridges from the past? Come learn about all the types of bridges ever built, and finish the day building historic bridges using K’nex building materials.
