This workgroup is for instructors who are just beginning or experienced discussion leaders and feel they could be getting more out of their sections. We’ll talk about how to facilitate and encourage conversations between students, help students identify the most vital concepts in the course, and design activities that engage students in the practice of the discipline. The workgroup is divided into three topics. Feel free to come to each session, or drop by for the topics that interest you.

October 22
Asking the Right Questions, Talking About What Counts: Make lesson plans for discussion section based on course goals. Develop questions that encourage critical thinking

November 5
Energize Discussion: Perfect for those listless 8 a.m. sections. We’ll review and develop discussion activities that get students up
and moving.

November 19
Quiet Discussion: What about those quieter students? These sessions focus on creating silent, reflective activities that allow space for students to process internally and encourage deeper thinking.
