TORONTO STILL CLEAR FOR TRAVEL
DESPITE SUSPECTED NEW SARS CASES

Toronto has been put back on the official list of SARS-affected areas but
the World Health Organization (WHO) is advising that travel to Canada's
largest city is still safe. The agency said it was reversing a decision,
taken almost two weeks ago, to declare the virus under control in Toronto
after a suspected new outbreak claimed three lives.
A statement issued by the WHO said: "The change in status follows
information, communicated by Health Canada, about new clusters of 26
suspect and 8 probable cases of SARS linked to 4 Toronto hospitals. As a
precautionary measure, all cases in the clusters are being treated as
possibly representing SARS until proven otherwise.
"At present, WHO is not recommending any restrictions on travel to
Toronto," the statement added.
Tests on suspected cases are still being carried out and the results are
expected sometime this week.

WHO LISTS TRAVEL ADVISORY FOR
HONG KONG AND GUANGDONG

Meanwhile, the WHO last Friday removed its recommendation that people
should postpone all but essential travel to Hong Kong Special
Administrative Region and Guangdong province, China. WHO is changing this
recommendation as the situation in these areas has now improved
significantly.
Recommendations to postpone travel are issued following consideration of
several factors, including the magnitude of probable SARS cases, the
pattern of recent local transmission, and the last dates of export of
cases.
