UOMC Goals & Objectives

Goals of the UOMC

  • Increase college men’s ability to lead healthy lifestyles by exploring how the male socialization process influences their behavior.
  • Reduce the likelihood of violence, conduct problems, sexism, sexual assault, bias crimes and other crimes against groups traditionally harmed by men.
  • Promote understanding among current and future service providers, of how to engage men in dialogues and other interventions to reduce men’s damage to themselves and others and to increase help seeking.

Future Objectives

  • Continue to develop new interventions directed at reducing campus violence, increasing help seeking, and retaining college men in higher education.
  • Conduct research determining the effectiveness of interventions with men.
  • Reach out to a broader cross section of men to enhance services to men of color, gay/bisexual, and transgendered men, men with disabilities, non-traditional college men, and underrepresented college men (e.g., 1st generation male college students).
  • Expand its ability to provide training to student service professionals through workshops, practicum, and the development of a class on interventions with men.
  • Collaborate with various campus organizations to help promote a safer campus community free of bias, bigotry, and sexism.
  • Organize conversations and dialogue with students about gender, health and wellness, and social justice.
  • Expand the membership to include more college men and women.

UOMC Funding

The Center operates on an extremely modest budget. The graduate school’s institutional priority supports funding for the Center Director, who is the most essential position for the daily operation and long-term sustainability of the Center. In short, the Center could not survive without funding for this position and would not be able to provide services that promote positive masculinity and prevent harmful behaviors.
