Date, Time, and Location
At 12:00 noon on Monday, 18 June 2012, the Philosophy Department will hold a commencement ceremony to honor graduating students.
The festivities will be held inside of the Beall Concert Hall in the MarAbel B. Frohnmayer Music Building at 961 East 18th Avenue.
We anticipate that our ceremony will not exceed 90 minutes.
Information for Graduating Students
Introductions of undergraduate philosophy majors at commencement are based on the information submitted on the Graduation Information Form, which is available either for online submission or as a PDF file (to be submitted to the Philosophy Department Office). The online form must be submitted no later than Monday in the week preceding graduation; the hard copy form may be submitted by the Thursday prior to graduation for the information to be included in the commencement introductions (the information used to introduce you during the graduation ceremony).

Graduating Students are expected to be at the commencement location and fully robed by 11:45 am; students and faculty will be led into a rehearsal room, form a single line to march into the Hall (faculty in the lead, followed by PhD, then MA, then BA/BS), and then take seats roped off and reserved for the graduates. Students will rise by rows when the first student's name is called; each student will walk up the steps on the the right hand side of the stage, approach the lectern, stop with feet pointing in the same direction as the graphic of feet on the floor (for the hand-shake photo op), receive an empty diploma cover (diplomas are mailed later to the address provided in DuckWeb), and then exit the stage by walking down the steps on the opposite end of the stage and returning to the same seat.
Accommodations for Guests
UO faculty members, family, friends, and classmates of our graduating students are always invited to join the celebration. Although no tickets are required to attend any UO graduation ceremony, early arrivals always have the best choice of seating. Please take a moment to think about your guests and any accommodations that need to be requested in advance (wheelchair ramp, sign language interpreter, etc.). If you or your guests have any special needs, please contact the Philosophy Department as soon as possible so requests can be met.
If you have concerns about hotel availability for Commencement 2012, please note that UO Commencement staff have been working with Travel Lane County since July 2011 to ensure that rooms will be available for Commencement 2012 guests. Travel Lane County has provided a very helpful site listing room availability for more than 60 venues in the Eugene/Springfield area. This website is updated every Monday and is available at: http://www.eugenecascadescoast.org/commencement/

Commencement Regalia
Here is a web page that shows proper hood draping:

This is a YouTube video that is a pretty good example too:

The American Council on Education (ACE) maintains an "Academic Costume Code and Ceremony Guide" where you can learn about the history of academic regalia and get a general idea of the rules used at the University of Oregon. Here is a link to that page:

Parking, Public Transportation, and Traffic Restrictions
Because of the US Olympic Track and Field Trials (which start on June 22) there will be significant impacts to the All-University Commencement on June 18, including:
- the closure of 15th from Agate to Onyx and the construction of an exclusion fence as part of the event super block;
- the complete closure of Agate St. from 15th to 18th;
- the closure of southbound Agate from Franklin to 15th (northbound Agate will remain open but will be restricted to shuttle bus and official University traffic during parts of the day).
Therefore, parking on campus June 18 will be extremely limited. Folks entering and exiting campus will most likely experience delays due to congestion and street closures necessary to maintain safe conditions for graduates and guests.
Commencement attendees are encouraged to utilize the Lane Transit District bus system or to park at Autzen Stadium and ride a free lift-equipped shuttle to campus on graduation day. The shuttles will run from Autzen Stadium to the corner of 13th Avenue & University Street as early as 7:00am, and the last shuttle will leave campus for Autzen Stadium at 5:45pm.
Although parking on campus during Commencement is strongly discouraged, folks who have need for ADA/accessible parking due to mobility limitations are asked to park in lots 52, 53, and 54 (on the corner of 15th Avenue & Walnut Street -- 2 blocks east of Villard Street). From that location, a shuttle will be available to transport people to sites on the main campus. Folks with ADA needs can also park at Autzen Stadium (in spaces permanently designated for ADA parking) and call the Access Shuttle at 541.852.2561 for pick-up (please allow 20-30 minutes for the Access Shuttle to arrive).
Once on campus, volunteers will be driving golf carts to assist guests in getting around campus. Golf carts can be found by visiting one of the Information Booths or by asking a commencement volunteer in a yellow polo shirt. Information booths will be staffed at:
- East 15th Avenue and Agate Street
- East 15th Avenue and University Street
- East 13th Avenue and Agate Street
- East 13th Avenue and University Street
Please also note that during Commencement, traffic is restricted on 15th Avenue, on 18th Avenue, and on University Street.
