Student Conduct Hearings Board Year End Report 2002

The 2001-2002 Hearing Board as comprised of the following members:

Hearing Board training took place on November 8, 2001 - the earliest it has ever occurred. About half of the new members attended. A second training was scheduled for December 5, 2001 and the remaining new members attended. Training lasted for approximately 2 hours. We discussed how a case gets to the board, hearing procedures, sanctioning, student rights and confidentiality.

Overall participation in the hearing board was good. We had one of the busiest years yet having heard 3 cases to date with another to be scheduled. It would be helpful in the future not to have so many faculty on sabbatical on the committee at the same time or to have alternates appointed so that scheduling hearings is not nearly as challenging as it was this year. The board heard 2 sexual assault cases and a forgery of University transcript hearing to this point with a drug violation soon to be scheduled.

The members who participated in hearings were prompt, attentive and dedicated to the process. They made thoughtful decisions no matter how long it took.

Colleen Bell, Andrew Marcus, Gerald Tindal and Margaret Paris are due to return next year, however Margaret had mentioned that she wanted off the committee. Therefore, we have 5 faculty positions to replace.

Overall, this year was busier than most but the committee and its members rose to the occasion.
