Subject: COI statement To: Peter B Gilkey From: Mary Jaeger Date: Thu, 22 Jan 2009 09:37:18 -0800 Dear Peter, First, I want to thank you for running the meeting yesterday. It was good to hear from so many people; I am very happy that the Senate is taking this on, and pleased that the administration is willing to listen. I just want to send over in writing the gist of what I said yesterday. Clarity and brevity are crucial. Most of us in the Humanities make such small amounts of money from books, etc., that our filling out anything beyond the briefest of forms wastes our time and that of the people who have to process and evaluate the answers; it a poor use of resources all around. I would very much like to see a question such as: "Do you expect to make more than $x (or a sum that is more that x % of your annual salary) in royalties, speaking fees, or fees for performances in the following year?" If one answers "no", then one is done. I do not know what the appropriate cutoff point would be: $1,000? $5,000? $10,000? A simple filter of that sort would allow the University to pay more attention to the areas that need it. You have my permission to post this comment. Mary Jaeger
