The University should find a way to back away from interfering with faculty publication. The rights of faculty to publish freely and to profit from publication royalties are quite longstanding and should not be trifled with. Higher priority should be given to other activities with a recognized potential for conflicts of interest or commitment. 2. Specific policy provisions on faculty publications are, however, warranted in cases when explicit permission is required for legal reasons or to protect the public reputation of the university and its faculty. These include the right to earn publication royalties in excess of $10,000 and the right to assign one's own textbooks in courses. I should add that, having entered the meeting with apprehension about the draft policy, I was heartened by the vigorous response of my colleagues and the evident good faith shown by the administration. You have my permission to post this. And thanks for moderating the meeting. Ian ------------------ Assoc. Prof. Ian F.
