Becoming a Member

The 09/10 season will be the second year we have had a dedicated competition team for snowboard and freestyle skiers. Because of this, we have created a separate recreational based club through the ASUO student government club program.

Club Sports Competition Team:

If you are a dedicated snowboarder or freestyle skier we encourage you to try out for our competitive team. The team will be comprised of 14 members. Returning members have priority to get on the team, and the other open slots are available to those who are most dedicated to the competition team in trip attendance, organizational help, and fundraising. It is not solely based on skill. This 14 member team will compete in a minimum of 4 competitions at Mt. Bachelor and attend weekly practice trips to Willamette Pass through out winter term as well a trip to Snow Warz (Undecided for 09/10).

Cuts are made by a board of 4 coordinators. Decisions will be made from a level of factors; time commitment and dedication being the biggest factor.

Club Sports Competition and Practice Trips:

All members of the team are required to become van certified in order to accompany us to the mountain for competitions. For both practice and competition trips we will have 2 twelve-person passenger vans, and 1 two-person cargo van.

If you compete with the team, you may attend several overnight trips. If you are on one, the following rules apply to all situations:

  • You must pay for your own lodging
  • All Club Sports rules and policies apply: drinking or drugs are never allowed
  • A designated coordinator must be on the trip

ASUO Recreational Club:

This group was created for the sole purpose of bringing skiers and snowboarders together regardless of skill level. If you are looking to meet people who share your passion in skiing or snowboarding, get rides up to the mountain every weekend, and grab discounts at our local shops (Boardsports Inc, and Tactics), but are not necessarily interested in competing; this is the club for you.

Bus Trips through the ASUO Recreational Club:

The recreational club will hold van trips every weekend up to Willamette Pass. These trips are open to any member who has paid dues, pending the availability of seats on the bus.

This 2010 season is the first year we are directly working with a mountain to coordinate transportation. Members will have the ability to pay online by themselves directly for a seat on the bus to Willamette Pass. If you are a season pass holder, each trip will cost $10. As long as 20 or more students sign up each weekend the bus will pick the members up the day of each trip on campus at a designated location.

Unfortunately the Club does not currently send any buses to any of the mountains around Portland (Ski Bow, Timberline, Meadows) or Mt. Bachelor.

Bus trips are available to anyone up to Mt. Bachelor every weekend through Berg's Ski Shop (www.bergsskishop.com). We will be working with Berg's in the 2010 season in attempt to have them pick up members of the club on campus who use their bus service to get to the mountain. Unfortunately outside of the Berg's Bus there are no other local bus trips to any other mountains on a regular basis.

Van Use and Competition Team Trip Guidlines:

Each van requires two certified drivers. To become a driver, members must take a van driving class in the club sports office. It’s an easy procedure, composed of a 30 minute class and then a brief driving test. The team coordinators email the class times, so make sure you are on the email server. If you can drive in the snow, take the class. You’ll get your license about 2 weeks after passing the class. If you have already been a driver for UO you just need to come into club sports and tell the office manager (Shawn Rubino) that you want to renew your certificate. Also, be sure to drive well (ie no speeding, etc). If the team gets more than 2 violations then we will not be permitted to use the vehicles. Club Sports does not allow you to take your own car to UO events, mainly because it introduces unnecessary liability to an uncontrollable situation.

Team Meetings:

1 or 2 meetings will be held at the start of Fall and Winter term to sign up new members and go over the general layout of the competition team and the recreational club. After these sign up meetings only smaller meetings will be held to hand out member ID's, Member T-shirts, make payments, or the occasional event. These meetings will be announced by email and have no set schedule from term to term.

Competition team members should expect 1 to 2 mandatory meetings per term to go over competition schedule, trip participation, member and trip organization etc. These meetings will also be announced by email with no set schedule.

Transportation Policies

The following policies apply to all Club Sport trips, whether bus or van:

  • Coordinator's requirements

    • Cancellation of a trip must be made by Wednesday before departure at 4:00 p.m.
    • Reservation for transportation must be made at least 1 week in advance (the Friday of the week before the trip)
    • A recognized coordinator must be in each vehicle

  • Member Requirements

    • Members must sign up on the green travel sheets by 4:00 p.m. on the Wednesday before the trip
    • Every member must show up for the trip once he or she signs up. This has been a problem in the past. Each person gets one chance to mess up. On the second no-show, he or she will lose all privileges to use team transportation for the rest of the year
    • Members must uphold the Club Sports code of conduct at all times
    • Alcohol and drugs are never allowed on trips (even if you are 21)
    • You are not only representing yourself, but the UO Snowboard Team, and Club Sports when you go on trips. Be sure to represent yourself well.

In Case of Emergency

Upon an auto accident, arrest, hospitalization, major injury, or death, the vehicle’s, driver or coordinator is responsible for calling Club Sports to report the accident. The following are a list of contacts with appropriate people to reach in such a situation:

Deals on Passes

Mt. Bachelor

Mt. Bachelor extends their September season pass rates an extra month to allow U of O club members to buy passes at the Pre-September rate. Deals and prices are as follows:

      Unrestricted: Teen (13-18), $249 Young Adult: (19-23), $349

      College 3 Day: $89 (Must be purchased BEFORE end of November!!!)

Club members will have to contact uosnow@uoregon.edu to purchase a pass at the special rate. This deal is offered to paid members of the club.

Discounts

Paid Members on both the competition team and recreational club will receive discounts at Boardsports Inc. and Tactics Boardshop in town.

We have a group page on www.facebook.com. You need to create a profile on this site if you don’t already have one, and then go to my groups and add U of O Snowboarding Club to your groups. The group allows members to meet each other, communicate about trips, or post pictures from the mountain.

This team is all about getting people to the mountain to ride, meeting new people with the same passion, and having a good time. It is a privilege that Club Sports can remove, so don’t do dumb stuff!
