Women in Technology and Science (WITS)

WITS Sponsorship Opportunities

Public and private sponsorship is vital to the WITS initiative. With your support, WITS will be able to provide seed funding for the professional development of both students and faculty, thereby increasing access to science research and discovery for underrepresented groups.

Sponsorship areas that will directly advance opportunities for women in science include:
Undergraduate Research Awards
Travel Grants for Graduate Students, Postdocs and New Faculty
High School Student Summer Research Awards
Merit Fellowship Award for Continuing Ph.D. Students
Faculty Recruitment Awards
Major Research Support for Current Faculty
Distinguished Speaker Series
Fellowship Support to Accommodate Pregnancy, Birth or Adoption

You may also make on online gift  to the WITS general fund, which supports the areas of greatest need.

Undergraduate Research Awards

Undergraduate Research Awards support summer and academic year research with the goal of familiarizing students with laboratory research and linking them with a mentor early on.

Travel Grants for Graduate Students, Postdocs and New Faculty

One proven way to increase career success for young scholars is to provide opportunities to present their research at professional meetings.  To be eligible for this program, participants must be an author on the abstract and present either a talk or poster at the meeting.  Funds received from WITS must be matched by a research advisor.

Award Amounts:
•    $300 for travel in the Northwest
•    $500 for travel elsewhere in the U.S.
•    $700 international travel

High School Student Research Awards

This awards will target exceptional female high school students who show the greatest promise for opportunities of this nature.

Cost:  $5,000/student ($3,500 stipend; $1,000 stipend for graduate student mentor*; $500 supplies)

* A Ph.D. student would be paired with high school student for their summer research project.

Merit Fellowship Award for Continuing Ph.D. Students

To further encourage the advancement of female graduate students in the sciences, Merit Fellowships will be awarded to current Ph.D. students who demonstrate exceptional work in their field.  Two recipients may be selected each year.  Candidates will be nominated by their faculty/department.

    Cost: $5,000 for a one-year fellowship

Contact Sarah Cheesman at (541) 346-0044 or sec.cas.uoregon.edu for more information about sponsoring a merit fellowship award for continuing Ph.D. students.

Faculty Recruitment Awards

This fund would provide money to supplement and embellish offers made to new faculty in sciences and math at UO in order to increase the representation of women in these fields. By providing additional funds to a new faculty member for start-up research costs, WITS hopes to maximize the chances that such offers will be accepted.  Priority will be given to recruitment of faculty into departments with the lowest female representation.

Major Research Support for Current Faculty

This competitive program would offer awards aimed at offsetting subtle biases, barriers and career interruptions that have been shown to hinder the advancement of women faculty in science and technology at research universities.

Award amount: up to $25,000 per year

Distinguished Speaker Series

One important way to increase the visibility of women in science is to invite highly accomplished women scientists from around the country to give a talk on their science and meet with women graduate students.  We will offer a $1,000 honorarium plus their travel expenses.  Science departments would compete for these funds. WITS will sponsor three speakers per year.

Cost:  $2,000/speaker; $6,000/year

Contact Sarah Cheesman at (541) 346-0044 or sec.cas.uoregon.edu for more information about sponsoring a distinguished guest speaker.

Fellowship Support to Accommodate Pregnancy, Birth of a Child or Adoption

One of the most important issues to increasing the representation of women in science and technology is the balance of career and family obligations. This fellowship supports Ph.D. students, postdoctoral scholars and faculty during the time when they cannot work on their research or as a laboratory-based teaching assistant because of a pregnancy, the birth of a child or bringing a child home for adoption.

•    Financial support for up to one quarter (12 weeks) — $8,000
•    Childcare subsidies:  up to $4,000 for care at university childcare facility

Contact Sarah Cheesman at (541) 346-0044 or sec.cas.uoregon.edu for more information about sponsoring a fellowship to accommodate pregnancy, birth of a child or adoption
